People who spend long hours sitting at a desk often experience tight hips, spinal stiffness and lower-back discomfort. Physician Dr Kunal Sood has explained a simple technique known as the Japanese towel method, which may provide temporary relief for some people. (Hindustan Times)

What Is the Japanese Towel Method?
The technique involves rolling a towel, placing it beneath the lower back and lying down gently over it.
According to Dr Sood, this position encourages the spine into mild extension and may help the lower back and hips feel more open after prolonged sitting. (Hindustan Times)
Why It May Help
Sitting for long periods keeps the hips and lower back in a flexed position. A gentle extension stretch may reduce muscle guarding, improve comfort and make movement feel easier.
However, Dr Sood cautioned that the method does not burn belly fat, permanently realign the spine or “reset” the body after one session. (Hindustan Times)
How to Try It Safely
Start with a small rolled towel and hold the position only for a short time. The stretch should feel gentle rather than forced.
Stop immediately and seek medical evaluation if it causes:
Sharp pain
Numbness or tingling
Pain travelling down the leg
Worsening discomfort
The towel method should be treated as one mobility exercise within a broader back-care plan, not as a cure for persistent pain. (Hindustan Times)
When to See a Doctor
Persistent or severe back pain should not be managed only through social-media exercises. Medical advice is important when pain follows an injury, affects daily activities or is accompanied by weakness, numbness or radiating symptoms.
