The Indian stock market experienced significant losses on Monday as both key indexes, Sensex and Nifty, ended the session
down sharply. After starting the day with a gain of around 100 points, the Sensex fluctuated through the morning and early afternoon before plunging in the last hour of trading, finally closing 331 points lower at 84,900. Similarly, the Nifty edged down by 108 points to finish at 25,959. The market was mainly dragged down by heavy selling from foreign institutional investors, who offloaded shares valued at ₹1,766 crores, dampening investor confidence. Adding to the downward pressure, the Indian rupee plummeted to a record low of 89.23 against the US dollar. Furthermore, profit booking at market highs intensified the selling mood across various sectors. While some stocks like Rail Vikas Nigam, NBCC, KPI Tech, Tech Mahindra, and AB Capital defied the trend with gains, others including Samman Capital, CG Power, Prestige Estate, Hindustan Aeronautics, and Bharat Electronics faced losses. The Nifty Mid Cap index ended down by 194 points, and the Bank Nifty declined by 32 points, showing that the entire market breadth participated in the selloff. The sharp fall highlights investor caution amid currency weakness intertwined with global market jitters. Many young investors are viewing the dip as a buying opportunity to accumulate quality stocks for the long term.
