Your Home Slippers Could Be Hurting Your Heels

That thin pair of slippers you wear around the house every day may be more harmful to your feet than you think.

Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Abhijit Agashe from Manipal Hospital, Baner, Pune, says repeatedly walking on hard indoor floors in flat, cushion-less slippers can gradually strain the heel and surrounding tissues.

Why Flat Slippers Can Become A Problem

Thin slippers provide very little cushioning or arch support.

When you walk on marble, granite or vitrified tiles, the force from each step is transferred almost directly to the heel. Over time, this repeated impact can irritate the plantar fascia and foot muscles.

Warning Signs To Watch

Heel pain may start gradually rather than suddenly.

Common early signs include stiffness or pain during the first few steps after waking up, discomfort after sitting for a long time and pain that slowly becomes more frequent over weeks or months.

Who May Be At Higher Risk

According to Dr Agashe, people who are overweight, have flat feet or high arches, are over 40, or spend long periods standing at home may face a greater risk.

Age can also reduce the natural cushioning beneath the heel, making repeated impact on hard floors more uncomfortable.

What Should You Wear Instead?

Doctors recommend indoor footwear with proper cushioning, arch support and a slightly raised heel instead of very thin rubber or foam slippers.

Avoiding prolonged barefoot walking on hard floors can also help reduce stress on the feet.

Simple Habits That May Help

Calf and plantar fascia stretching, maintaining a healthy weight and taking short sitting breaks when standing for long periods can help reduce heel strain.

If pain continues for weeks or begins affecting daily activities, medical evaluation may be necessary.

The Bigger Takeaway

You may carefully choose supportive shoes before leaving home, but the footwear you spend hours wearing indoors matters too.

A small change in your everyday slippers could potentially prevent months of persistent heel discomfort.
