Your Body Says 40 Your Immunity Could Be Older
Your age on paper may not tell the full story about how well your body is ageing.
Doctors say the immune system has its own biological ageing process, and two people of exactly the same age can have very different levels of immune resilience. Some may recover quickly from infections and respond well to vaccines, while others may frequently fall ill or take much longer to recover.

What Is Immune Ageing?
As people grow older, the immune system gradually becomes less efficient at identifying and fighting infections. This process is known as immunosenescence.
Doctors also describe another process called inflammaging, where the body remains in a state of low-grade inflammation over long periods. Together, these changes may contribute to more infections, slower healing, weaker vaccine responses and higher risks of some chronic conditions.
Can You Measure Your Immune Age?
There is currently no single routine blood test that can give you an exact “immune age”.
Instead, doctors assess several factors together, including how frequently you get infections, how quickly you recover, your response to vaccines, inflammatory markers, immune-cell patterns, nutritional status and metabolic health.
What Can Make Immunity Age Faster?
According to experts quoted by Times of India, several factors can contribute to faster immune decline.
These include chronic inflammation, poorly controlled diabetes, obesity, autoimmune conditions, repeated infections, poor sleep, stress, nutritional deficiencies, environmental exposure and certain medications.
Why Early Detection Matters
Recognising weakening immune resilience early may help doctors intervene before repeated infections or complications become serious.
Depending on the individual, this could involve improving management of conditions such as diabetes or kidney disease, correcting nutritional deficiencies, adjusting vaccination strategies and making lifestyle changes.
Adult Vaccination Matters Too
Doctors stress that vaccination is not only for children.
As immunity weakens with age, adults can become more vulnerable to illnesses such as influenza, shingles, pneumococcal disease, COVID-19 and other respiratory infections. Staying up to date with doctor-recommended vaccines can therefore become increasingly important.
Can You Slow Immune Ageing?
You cannot completely stop immune ageing, and no food or supplement can permanently reverse it.
However, doctors say regular physical activity, adequate sleep and a balanced diet containing enough protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats can help support immune function over time.
The Bigger Takeaway
Your birthday tells you your chronological age. It does not necessarily reveal how resilient your immune system is.
The goal is not to chase a younger “immune age”, but to recognise declining immune health early and protect it through appropriate medical care, vaccination and sustainable lifestyle habits.
