The Bharatiya Janata Party has criticised Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for not visiting Wayanad following a deadly landslide, accusing them of treating the Kerala constituency as a place of “political convenience.”

The landslide occurred on July 7, 2026, at the construction site of the Anakkampoyil–Meppadi twin-tube tunnel project connecting Wayanad and Kozhikode districts. Eight people were reported killed in the incident. (Moneycontrol)
BJP Calls Gandhis ‘Political Tourists’
BJP national spokesperson Tuhin Sinha accused the Gandhi siblings of failing to personally reach out to the victims’ families.
He alleged that, apart from condolence messages on social media, neither leader had visited the affected area and described them as “part-time politicians” and “political tourists.” (Moneycontrol)
Priyanka Is the Current Wayanad MP
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra currently represents Wayanad in the Lok Sabha, while Rahul Gandhi held the seat from 2019 until 2024.
Sinha claimed that the constituency had been used by the two Congress leaders for their “political survival” and questioned their commitment to the region during times of crisis. (Moneycontrol)
BJP Questions Environmental Action
The BJP spokesperson also questioned what measures Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had taken to address Wayanad’s environmental vulnerability.
Wayanad is an ecologically sensitive region that has repeatedly witnessed landslides and extreme-weather-related disasters. Sinha asked what preventive steps had been pursued since Rahul became the constituency’s MP in 2019. (Moneycontrol)
Congress Leaders Had Expressed Condolences
Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi had expressed grief over the landslide and called for assistance to the affected families and rescue operations.
Priyanka also appealed to UDF workers and local party representatives to support relief efforts while following the administration’s safety instructions. (The Times of India)

The issue has now triggered a political dispute over whether elected representatives must personally visit disaster-hit areas immediately or whether relief coordination and official intervention should take priority.
