Hyderabad Metro Is Getting Bigger: 60 New Coaches Coming

Hyderabad Metro Rail is set for a major capacity upgrade, with the Telangana government moving ahead with plans to procure 60 new metro coaches as daily ridership continues to rise.

At present, 57 metro trains operate with three coaches each. Under the proposed expansion, one additional coach is expected to be added to each rake, increasing passenger capacity across the network.

Why More Coaches Are Needed

Hyderabad Metro currently operates on three corridors LB Nagar to Miyapur, JBS to MGBS and Nagole to Raidurg covering 69.2 km.

Around 4.6 lakh commuters use the network across nearly 1,200 trips every day, and officials say ridership has been steadily increasing.

₹1,200 Crore Upgrade

Each new coach is estimated to cost around ₹20 crore.

With 60 coaches planned, the total expenditure could be around ₹1,200 crore, which is expected to be funded separately by the Telangana government.

BEML Likely To Get The Order

According to the report, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited has begun the procurement process following directions from Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy.

Officials have reportedly been asked to move toward placing the order with Bengaluru-based Bharat Earth Movers Limited, or BEML, which already supplies rolling stock to metro systems in cities such as Delhi, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

DMRC Could Act As Consultant

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation is also likely to be involved as a consultant during the procurement process.

BEML and DMRC signed an agreement earlier this year to jointly pursue metro projects, while DMRC is separately assisting Telangana in matters connected with the state’s takeover of Hyderabad Metro Phase 1 from L&T.

Same Technology As Existing Trains

Hyundai Rotem, the South Korean company that manufactured Hyderabad Metro’s existing coaches, is reported to have agreed to share technology with BEML for the new order.

The new coaches are expected to follow the same technical specifications as the existing fleet so they can be integrated smoothly into Hyderabad Metro’s current Communication Based Train Control system.

When Will The New Coaches Arrive?

The timeline is still uncertain.

Officials are reportedly aiming to make the new coaches available within eight to 10 months, but earlier estimates suggested the overall process could take longer because of procurement, manufacturing and the ongoing Phase 1 handover.

BEML has separately indicated that manufacturing and delivery could take around 15 months once an order is formally placed.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Anyone who uses Hyderabad Metro during peak hours knows how crowded the three-coach trains can become.

Adding more coaches could increase capacity without requiring entirely new train sets, helping the system handle rising passenger numbers more efficiently.

For Hyderabad’s growing public-transport network, the move could be one of the most visible upgrades to the existing metro system in years.
