Telangana’s Skyburst

For Telangana, Thursday turned into a nightmare as the state received record-breaking rains. According to IMD, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagityal, and Kamareddy were issued red alerts, meaning extremely heavy rainfall. Adilabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Medak, and Vikarabad were put on orange alert for very heavy rain. Even Hyderabad, Rangareddy, and Yadadri-Bhuvanagiri were placed under yellow alert for possible heavy showers.

Flood-like conditions have gripped many areas. Viral videos showed vehicles submerged, roads looking like rivers, and people struggling to move in knee- to waist-deep water.

Rain in Numbers

  • Kamareddy received a record 44.05 cm rainfall in one day – the highest in the state.

  • Medak, Nirmal, and Adilabad also reported between 20–40 cm rainfall.

  • At least 900 people were rescued by NDRF and Army teams.

  • One person died after a wall collapse.

Schools were shut in many districts including Kamareddy, Medak, Nirmal, Adilabad, Karimnagar, Rajanna-Sircilla, and Jagitial, giving students an unexpected holiday but leaving parents worried.

Floods Hit Daily Life Hard

Highways remain blocked, trains have been delayed, and bus routes diverted. In Hyderabad, areas like LB Nagar, Uppal, and Kukatpally witnessed heavy waterlogging, causing massive traffic jams.

Farmers in districts like Nizamabad and Kamareddy saw their paddy and cotton crops submerged. This is a double blow for them, as they are already facing rising cultivation costs. Daily wage workers like auto drivers, construction workers, and street vendors also lost income due to the shutdown.

Relief Measures

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has instructed officials to carry out relief work and evacuate stranded families. NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in the worst-affected districts. Relief camps have been opened, though locals are complaining about lack of proper food and medical facilities.

Authorities have asked people to avoid unnecessary travel, keep away from overflowing lakes and open electric poles, and remain indoors as much as possible.

What’s Next?

IMD says that the rains will gradually reduce in north Telangana districts like Nirmal, Kamareddy, and Nizamabad by evening. However, Hyderabad may continue to receive thunderstorms until Friday.

MediaFx People’s View

This rain once again shows how the poor suffer the most. While the rich sit safely in big houses, small farmers, workers, and students face the worst. Crops get washed away, homes are damaged, and wages are lost.

Instead of only spending money on Hyderabad flyovers and fancy projects, the government should focus on better drainage systems, housing for the poor, and flood prevention infrastructure. Climate change is here, and unless people’s lives are kept at the center of planning, every year rains will drown not just our roads but also the future of the working class.
