One Aadhaar, Two Salaries? Telangana Flags 80 Govt Employees

The Telangana government has flagged 80 government employees linked to just 40 Aadhaar numbers, after an examination of salary and employee records revealed instances where two different employees were registered against the same Aadhaar number.
The discrepancy was detected through the state’s Integrated Financial Management and Information System (IFMIS). Chief Secretary Sanjay Jaju subsequently issued a circular to government departments on August 7 directing them to conduct internal inquiries.
Two Employees Linked to One Aadhaar
According to the report, each of the 40 Aadhaar numbers was associated with two regular government employees, despite the individuals having different names and working in different departments.
The employees concerned were reportedly drawing monthly salaries ranging from approximately ₹1 lakh to ₹4 lakh.
Revenue and Police Employees Among Cases
In one example cited in the report, a senior Revenue Department employee earning more than ₹2 lakh per month and a Police Department employee earning above ₹1 lakh per month were found registered under the same Aadhaar number despite having different identities.
Which Departments Are Affected?
Finance Department officials reportedly found that most of the cases were concentrated in the:
Police, Revenue, Education, Panchayat Raj and Public Health departments. The discrepancies emerged when officials cross-checked Aadhaar details belonging to regular, grant-in-aid and temporary staff in government records.
Were Employees Drawing Two Salaries?
The report says officials are examining cases in which two separate identities linked to the same Aadhaar number appear to have been used for salary payments.
However, the matter is now under departmental inquiry, so it would be premature to conclude that every flagged case represents deliberate fraud. The investigations will have to determine whether the discrepancies resulted from identity misuse, data-entry errors or other irregularities.
Government Orders Internal Probe
Following the discovery, the Chief Secretary asked the concerned departments to verify the employee records and investigate how multiple government employees came to be associated with identical Aadhaar numbers.
The findings could lead to further administrative or legal action depending on what the departmental inquiries establish.
