Old Flat? You Can Still Make It Smart Without Breaking Walls

Think your 10- or 15-year-old apartment is too old to become a smart home?

Not necessarily.

Promo for old apartment smart home upgrades, with a hand tapping a tablet and text: 5 easy upgrades, no rewiring, ₹10,000 only.

According to home automation expert Neil Savant, older apartments can be upgraded using retrofit automation technology designed to work with the home’s existing switches, wiring and appliances without major civil work.

What Is Retrofit Automation?

Older Indian apartments were not designed for Wi-Fi-connected devices, smart locks or automated appliances.

They often have thick walls, older switchboards and wiring systems that make homeowners assume a smart-home upgrade will require expensive rewiring.

Retrofit automation takes a different approach.

Smart modules can be installed behind existing switch plates, inside current junction boxes or through plug-in devices, adding automation without breaking walls or replacing the entire electrical system.

  1. Start With Smart Switches

One of the easiest upgrades is a retrofit smart switch.

These small modules sit behind your existing switchboard, meaning the physical switch and wiring can remain largely unchanged.

Once connected, lights and other circuits can be controlled through an app, voice commands or schedules.

The expert suggests starting with just one or two rooms, such as the living room and master bedroom.

  1. Upgrade Your Home Security

A smart video doorbell can allow homeowners to see who is at their door even when they are away.

This can be paired with a retrofit smart lock on the main entrance to add another layer of convenience and security without rebuilding the doorway.

  1. Make Your Existing AC And TV Smart

You do not necessarily need to replace your air conditioner or television.

An IR blaster can learn the signals used by existing remote-controlled devices and allow them to be controlled through a smartphone.

Users can also create schedules and automations, such as switching off the AC automatically under certain conditions.

  1. Fix Weak Wi-Fi With A Mesh Network

Thick concrete walls can create dead zones in older apartments, especially larger 2BHKs and 3BHKs.

Instead of depending on a single router, a mesh Wi-Fi system uses multiple small nodes placed around the home.

Together, they create a more consistent network so smart devices can stay connected across different rooms.

  1. Create Automated Daily Routines

Once different devices are connected, homeowners can create “scenes” that trigger multiple actions together.

For example, a morning routine could open curtains, switch on the geyser and turn on kitchen lights automatically.

Leaving for work could become a single command that turns off lights and AC, locks the door and activates the security camera.

How Much Can It Cost?

Smart-home upgrades do not necessarily require a huge budget.

According to Savant, a basic retrofit smart-home setup can begin at under ₹10,000.

Homeowners also do not need to automate every room at once. A few carefully chosen upgrades can be added gradually.

He says that with the right approach, even a 15-year-old 2BHK could begin functioning more like a modern smart apartment within a few weekends.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Smart homes are often associated with new luxury apartments, expensive renovations and complicated wiring.

Retrofit technology changes that equation.

For people living in older flats especially renters or homeowners who do not want major construction smart switches, mesh Wi-Fi, video doorbells and plug-in automation can offer many of the same conveniences with far less disruption.

The biggest takeaway is simple: you do not need to rebuild your home to make it smarter.
