At Smiles Institute of Gastroenterology, doctors have recorded a 12% increase in childhood IBD cases over the past six months, with 886 children diagnosed over the last five years, according to the report.

Changing Diet Patterns Under Focus

Experts say the increasing consumption of:

  • 🍔 Ultra-processed foods

  • 🥤 Sugary beverages

  • 🍟 Packaged snacks

  • 🍬 High-fat and high-sugar foods

along with reduced exercise and changes in gut microbiome may be contributing to the rise in cases.

Urban Lifestyle Impact

Doctors believe modern routines including sedentary habits, less outdoor activity and increased dependence on convenience foods — are affecting children’s digestive health.

The shift from traditional high-fibre diets towards processed food consumption is being examined as one possible factor behind rising gut-related disorders among children.

What Is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic condition involving inflammation of the digestive tract.

It includes conditions such as:

  • Crohn’s disease

  • Ulcerative colitis

Symptoms may include:

⚠️ Persistent abdominal pain⚠️ Frequent diarrhoea⚠️ Blood in stools⚠️ Weight loss⚠️ Growth problems in children

Early medical attention can help manage the condition effectively.

Doctors Urge Healthier Habits

Experts recommend parents encourage:

✅ Fibre-rich meals✅ Regular physical activity✅ Reduced processed foods✅ Proper hydration✅ Avoiding unnecessary antibiotics

Doctors also caution that these lifestyle factors are associated with risk patterns, but they do not mean a single food item or habit alone causes IBD.
