TL;DR
Today, 15th September 2025, is the final day to file your Income Tax Returns (ITR) for income earned in 2024-25. The government has confirmed there will be no more extensions beyond today. If you miss the deadline, you can still file later but with penalty, interest and loss of certain tax benefits.

What’s Happening
The original deadline for ITR filing was 31st July 2025.
It was extended to 15th September 2025 because of changes in ITR forms and updates in the online system.
Now, the Income Tax Department has clearly said there will be no extension beyond today.
Rumours on WhatsApp and social media about a 30th September extension are fake. Only today counts.
What If You Don’t File Today?
If you miss the deadline, you can still file a belated return, but:
You may pay a penalty up to ₹5,000 if your income is above ₹5 lakh.
If your income is below ₹5 lakh, penalty is ₹1,000.
You’ll also face interest charges on delayed tax payments.
Some benefits like carrying forward losses and certain deductions may be lost.
Basically, filing today helps you save money and avoid extra stress.
Issues Faced by People
Many last-minute filers are reporting problems like the portal being slow, OTP delays, or payment glitches. Authorities claim the system is stable, but heavy traffic is causing hiccups.
For city users, this is just a headache. But for small-town workers or people with weak internet, it becomes a bigger barrier to filing on time.
MediaFx People’s Take
From the people’s perspective, these rigid deadlines mostly hurt the working and middle class. Farmers, small shopkeepers, daily wage earners, and salaried employees struggle with access to accountants, internet, and awareness.
Instead of punishing ordinary citizens with penalties, the government should ensure a simple, glitch-free, and accessible filing system for everyone. The reality is, the poor and middle class face the brunt of these rules, while the wealthy always manage to find loopholes.
