Kenya's Abduction Crisis: Government Critics Vanishing! 😱🕵️‍♂️

MediaFx

TL;DR: Kenya is facing a surge in abductions targeting government critics, with 82 reported cases since June 2024. Despite government denials, evidence points to state involvement, sparking public outrage and protests. Human rights groups are demanding accountability and the protection of democratic rights.

Hey folks! Have you heard what's happening in Kenya? 🇰🇪 It's pretty alarming! Since June 2024, 82 people who spoke out against the government have been abducted! 😨

Many of these individuals were active on social media, sharing content that criticized the government. For instance, four users went missing after posting AI-generated images of President William Ruto that some found offensive.

This has led to fears that freedom of expression is under threat.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is super worried, saying the country might be slipping back to the "dark days" when government critics often disappeared.

Despite clear evidence, like CCTV footage, the government denies any involvement. The police also say they're not part of this, leaving investigations to the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

On January 14, two young men who were abducted shared their stories with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). One of them, Gideon Kibet, a cartoonist known for mocking government figures, was held for two weeks before being released. The other, Billy Mwangi, a 24-year-old student, was also detained and mistreated.

Human rights groups and social movements are speaking out, calling these abductions a clear violation of Kenya's Constitution and international human rights laws. Organizations like Kituo Cha Sheria and the Mathare Social Justice Centre are even taking the matter to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Adding to the tension, the Kenya University Students Association (KUSA) has announced nationwide protests starting January 15, 2025, to stand against these abductions. Previous protests have been met with police force, including teargas and arrests, which has only fueled public anger.

This situation has caught international attention, with global human rights organizations urging the Kenyan government to respect democratic rights and ensure the safety of its citizens.
