TL;DR:Ā Starting August 25, 2025, India Post will stop sending most parcels to the USA. Only letters, documents, and gifts up to $100 (around ā¹8,300)Ā will be allowed. The reason? New US customs rules that end the duty-free entry for goods under $800 and demand all shipments pay taxes. With no clarity on how this duty will be collected, India and several other countries are halting postal bookings to the US.

Big news for desi families and businesses! India Post has confirmed that from August 25, most #postalservicesĀ to the USA will be suspended. So if you were planning to send food, clothes, or online orders to your cousins or customers abroad ā chances are it wonāt go through.
š Whatās still allowed:
Letters
Documents
Gifts worth up to $100 (ā¹8,300 approx)
Everything else ā from clothes to electronics ā will be blocked.
Why is this happening?
The US government has issued a new customs orderĀ that ends the duty-free allowanceĀ for goods under $800. This takes effect from August 29, 2025. Earlier, if you sent a parcel worth less than $800, no customs duty was charged. Now, even the smallest packages will be taxed.
Because thereās no clear process yet on who will collect this duty and how it will be implemented, postal services around the world ā including Germany, France, Belgium, and Scandinavian countries ā are also pausing shipments to the US.
What about existing bookings?
India Post has said that refundsĀ will be given for consignments already booked that cannot be dispatched.
Who gets affected?
Families:Ā NRIs will miss out on their usual food packets, rakhis, or festive gifts from India.
Small businesses:Ā Sellers who send clothes, handicrafts, or products to US buyers using India Post will face losses.
Students abroad:Ā Many Indian students in the US rely on home parcels. They may now have to depend on expensive private couriers.
Peopleās Perspective
This suspension clearly shows how working-class families and small traders are the ones most affected whenever governments bring sudden rules. Rich corporates can still afford private courier services, but ordinary people will be stuck.
Instead of making things harder for migrants, students, and families, there should be a fair and affordable systemĀ that allows parcels to continue without overburdening the people.
Final Take
If you have urgent parcels to the US, send them before August 25. After that, only letters and small-value gifts will be accepted. Once again, itās ordinary people who end up paying the price for unclear government policies.
