The debate resurfaced after the release of Akhil Akkineni’s Lenin, with some social-media users comparing its depiction of Karna with the character’s presentation in Kalki 2898 AD. One user accused Nag Ashwin’s film of excessively glorifying Karna and criticised its Mahabharata-inspired climax. (Hindustan Times)

Nag Ashwin Cites the Mahabharata

Responding to the criticism, Nag Ashwin shared a passage from Bibek Debroy’s translation of the Mahabharata.

The filmmaker highlighted a section from the Drona Vadha Parva in which Krishna speaks about Karna’s abilities while addressing Arjuna. He urged critics to read the epic before questioning his interpretation. (Hindustan Times)

Nag Ashwin maintained that he has deep respect for Indian history and mythology and added that viewers should wait for Kalki 2898 AD: Part 2 to understand the larger narrative.

Why Karna’s Portrayal Became Controversial

In Kalki 2898 AD, Prabhas’ character Bhairava is revealed to have a connection with Karna, who is presented as a powerful and heroic warrior during the climax.

Some viewers argued that the film glorified Karna while overlooking controversial decisions associated with him in the Mahabharata. Others defended the portrayal, pointing to passages that praise his courage, generosity and skill in battle. (Hindustan Times)

Debate Revived After Lenin

The discussion gained fresh attention after Lenin featured actor Pramod Panju as Karna.

Comparisons between the two films triggered online arguments about mythology, cinematic freedom and whether filmmakers should strictly follow traditional interpretations of epic characters.

Kalki Sequel Is in Development

The sequel to Kalki 2898 AD is currently under development.

Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan are expected to return in their respective roles. Nag Ashwin has previously indicated that the next chapter will place greater focus on the characters played by Prabhas and Kamal Haasan while expanding the film’s mythology-meets-science-fiction universe. Deepika Padukone Will Not Return

Vyjayanthi Movies previously announced that Deepika Padukone would not return for the sequel.

She played SUM-80, the pregnant woman protected by Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama. While no replacement has been officially confirmed, reports have suggested that Sai Pallavi may have been approached for the role. (Hindustan Times)

A Major Expectations Test for Part 2

Released in 2024, Kalki 2898 AD became a major commercial success and reportedly earned more than ₹1,000 crore worldwide.

Nag Ashwin’s latest response suggests that the sequel may provide more context for Karna’s role and address questions left unresolved by the first film. (Hindustan Times)
