What Is ‘Nimrods’ About?

The film follows three teenage friends Tommy, Fred and Chad  who set off on a cross-country road trip from Kansas to Los Angeles after mistakenly believing their band has been invited to open for Green Day on New Year's Eve.

Tommy, played by Mason Thames, sees the supposed opportunity as his chance to change his life. What follows is a chaotic road trip filled with teenage ambition, friendship and the reckless energy of chasing a rock-and-roll dream.

Inspired by Green Day’s Early Years

While the story is fictionalised, it draws heavily from Green Day's real experiences touring in a van during the early 1990s, before the band's breakthrough with Dookie in 1994.

The film captures the DIY attitude and unpredictability of the band's early days, when touring meant long drives, small venues and living on the road.

Green Day’s Music Takes Centre Stage

Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool contributed their experiences and insights to the project, while Green Day's music features prominently in the film's soundtrack. The band members also appear as themselves and are credited as producers.

  • Mason Thames

  • Kylr Coffman

Why Is It Called ‘Nimrods’?

The movie was previously titled New Year's Rev  before being renamed Nimrods in April 2026.

The new title references Green Day's 1997 album Nimrod , linking the film directly to the band's musical history.
