One of Hyderabad’s best-known hospitality landmarks, Taj Banjara, is being demolished, bringing an iconic chapter in the city’s history to a close.

The former luxury hotel in Banjara Hills was acquired by Auro Realty, the real-estate arm of the Aurobindo Group, for ₹315 crore. The transaction covers a prime lakeside property measuring approximately 3.4 acres. (The Times of India)
Demolition Enters Visible Phase
Structural demolition work has begun at the property, with crews clearing the old hotel complex for redevelopment.
The process is expected to continue over the coming months as the site is prepared for a major new real-estate project. (Hyderabad Mail)
Around 40 Floors Reportedly Planned
People familiar with the redevelopment have indicated that a high-rise tower of approximately 40 floors could be constructed at the site.
However, Auro Realty has not yet publicly released the final project design, approved height, development mix or construction schedule. The 40-storey plan should therefore be treated as a reported proposal rather than an officially confirmed project specification. (Deccan Chronicle)
A Landmark for Nearly Four Decades
Taj Banjara was among Hyderabad’s earliest five-star hotels and became closely associated with the growth of Banjara Hills as a premium residential, commercial and hospitality destination.
Over the decades, it hosted weddings, conferences, celebrity gatherings, luxury stays and countless personal celebrations. Its location overlooking Banjara Lake made it one of the city’s most recognisable hotel properties. (The Times of India)
Hotel Closed After Lease Ended
The property had been operated by Taj GVK Hotels until its lease expired in 2023, after which the hotel closed.
In February 2025, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation reportedly sealed the premises over unpaid property-tax dues. The property was subsequently acquired by Auro Realty in a transaction completed in October 2025. (The Times of India)
Prime Banjara Hills Land
The acquisition is significant because large redevelopment parcels are rarely available in central Banjara Hills.
The property includes around 1.2 lakh square feet of built-up area and occupies a strategically valuable location on Road No. 1, close to major commercial, retail and residential zones. (Hindustan Times)
Hyderabad Bids Farewell
For generations of Hyderabad residents, Taj Banjara represented more than a hotel. It was part of the city’s social and cultural landscape.
As its familiar structure disappears, the site is preparing for a new identity—reflecting Hyderabad’s continuing shift from low-rise landmarks to premium vertical development.
