20 Years of Twitter: From the Blue Bird to Elon Musk’s X

Twitter, now officially known as X, has completed 20 years since its public launch on July 15, 2006.

What began as a simple platform for posting 140-character status updates eventually transformed how people follow breaking news, political developments, entertainment, sports and global events in real time. Despite its rebranding, many users continue to refer to the platform by its original name, Twitter. (Al Jazeera)

From ‘Twttr’ to Twitter

The platform was developed at podcasting company Odeo by Jack Dorsey, Noah Glass, Biz Stone and Evan Williams. Its early working name was “Twttr,” inspired partly by the short-code format used for SMS services.

Jack Dorsey posted the first message on the platform in March 2006, while the full public version was introduced on July 15 that year. (Wikipedia)

Changing How the World Consumes News

Twitter became one of the world’s most influential real-time communication platforms. Journalists, politicians, celebrities, activists and ordinary users relied on it to share immediate updates and participate in public conversations.

The platform played a significant role in covering elections, political movements, natural disasters, conflicts and major cultural moments. Its hashtags, retweets and trending topics became central features of internet culture. (Diario AS)

Elon Musk’s Takeover and the X Rebrand

Elon Musk acquired Twitter for approximately $44 billion in 2022 and took the company private. In 2023, the platform was renamed X, replacing the globally recognised blue-bird branding with a black-and-white X logo. (Wikipedia)

Under Musk, the company introduced paid verification and subscription services, reduced its workforce, modified content-moderation policies and expanded features such as longer posts, video and integration with the Grok artificial-intelligence chatbot. (El País)

A Platform Surrounded by Controversy

The changes have generated intense debate over misinformation, political polarisation, hate speech, account verification and the platform’s approach to free expression.

Competitors including Meta’s Threads and Bluesky have attempted to attract former Twitter users. However, X continues to retain a prominent position in political, media and real-time public conversations. (El País)

Twitter’s Name Lives On

Although the company officially became X, the words “Twitter,” “tweet” and “retweet” remain deeply embedded in popular culture.

Twenty years after its launch, the platform’s enduring influence can be seen not only in its technology but also in the way people communicate, react to news and participate in global conversations.
