Actor Suriya has opened up about his family’s move from their spacious Chennai bungalow to a more compact 1,700-sq-ft home in Mumbai, saying the smaller space has brought a different kind of happiness.

Suriya and his wife Jyotika relocated to Mumbai with their children after the Covid-19 pandemic. The move was driven partly by family considerations, including being closer to Jyotika’s parents and giving their children a more settled lifestyle.
From a Spacious Chennai Home to Mumbai
The family had previously lived in a much larger bungalow in Chennai.
But Suriya says that having more space doesn't necessarily translate into greater happiness. Their Mumbai home is considerably smaller, yet the actor feels the cosy environment has created a stronger sense of togetherness for the family.
Why Did the Family Move to Mumbai?
The relocation was not simply about choosing a different house.
According to Suriya, the family wanted to be closer to Jyotika's parents, while the move also supported her professional commitments in Mumbai. Their children, Diya and Dev, were another important consideration.
Suriya continues to work extensively in Tamil cinema, travelling between Mumbai and the South for his shoots.
“Cosy” Over “Grand”
The story offers an interesting contrast between celebrity luxury and everyday family life.
A large bungalow can offer space, privacy and grandeur, but Suriya's comments suggest that the feeling of being together matters more than the size of the house.
Their Mumbai home may be smaller, but for the actor, its compact nature has created a more intimate family environment.
Suriya and Jyotika’s Mumbai Chapter
The couple, who married in 2006, have continued to balance careers in different film industries while raising their two children.
Jyotika has also returned to working more actively in Hindi-language projects, making Mumbai an increasingly important base for the family.
The family’s move therefore represents more than a change of address — it reflects a shift in priorities around family, careers and the kind of lifestyle they want for their children.
