Why ‘Sleep Shaming’ Culture Is So Common in India

A growing social trend in India “sleep shaming” is drawing attention for how deeply it’s embedded in everyday life. From being judged for waking up late to being labelled “lazy” for prioritising rest, many Indians face subtle criticism around their sleep habits.

Experts say this mindset is rooted in long-standing cultural values that glorify productivity, early rising, and constant hustle. Waking up early is often equated with discipline and success, while sleeping in even occasionally is viewed negatively.

Social pressures, family expectations, and workplace culture further reinforce this idea. In many households, especially among older generations, sleeping beyond a certain time is frowned upon, regardless of individual schedules or lifestyle differences.

However, health professionals warn that such attitudes can be harmful. Adequate sleep is essential for mental health, focus, and overall well-being. Ignoring personal sleep needs in favour of social approval can lead to burnout, stress, and long-term health issues.

With increasing awareness around mental health and work-life balance, experts are now urging a shift in mindset encouraging people to respect individual sleep cycles instead of judging them.

The conversation is slowly changing, but breaking free from deeply ingrained beliefs may take time.
