Author Chetan Bhagat has sparked a wave of reactions online after sharing a staircase dance video featuring three of his longtime friends from IIT Delhi.
The video quickly travelled across social-media platforms, drawing both appreciation for the friends’ playful spirit and criticism from viewers who found the performance awkward.
Chetan Bhagat Recreates Viral Dance Trend
In the Instagram video, Bhagat and his friends perform coordinated steps on a staircase to a recreated version of the classic Hindi song “Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi.”
Bhagat tagged Nitin Singhal, Ajay Gupta and Manish Gupta in the post. He joked that while they could not match Anupam Kher’s acting skills, his old IIT Delhi friends were willing to embarrass themselves together.
Inspired by Anupam Kher’s Video
Bhagat’s reel was reportedly inspired by a similar video recently shared by actor Anupam Kher.
Kher had performed to a Kishore Kumar song alongside actors Ranvir Shorey, Parvin Dabas and Boman Irani. Bhagat adapted the concept with his college friends and turned it into a lighthearted IIT Delhi reunion moment.

The dance attracted mixed reactions. Some social-media users jokingly asked, “Why Chetan, why?”, while others praised the group for confidently participating in a younger-generation trend.

Chetan Bhagat’s IIT Delhi Connection
Bhagat graduated with a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from IIT Delhi in 1995 before earning an MBA from IIM Ahmedabad.
He later worked as an investment banker in Hong Kong before becoming a full-time author following the success of his debut novel, Five Point Someone, which was inspired by student life at IIT.
