Telangana recently commemorated the 130th birth anniversary of Suravaram Pratap Reddy, a luminary whose contributions as a historian, writer, editor, and social reformer continue to shape Telugu culture and literature. Known for founding the Golconda Patrika in 1926, Reddy empowered Telugu-speaking communities at a time when the Nizam administration discouraged public use of the language. The newspaper became a beacon of awareness, awakening people to social issues and instilling pride in Telugu heritage. Former Vice President of India, Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, praised Reddy as a visionary who guided the Telugu community during oppressive times, placing him alongside iconic figures like Kandukuri Veeresalingam Pantulu and Gurajada Apparao.
The anniversary celebrations were held at the Suravaram Pratap Reddy Auditorium in Bhashir Bagh, Hyderabad, organized by the Suravaram Pratap Reddy Sahitya Vaijayanthi Trust under the presidency of Acharya Elluri Shiva Reddy. Dignitaries including Naidu, Telangana Media Academy Chairman K. Srinivas Reddy, Sahitya Akademi awardee Dr. Nandini Sidha Reddy, Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. Varaprasad Reddy, and Trust members, alongside Reddy’s family, poets, and writers, attended the program. The event began with floral tributes to Reddy’s portrait, followed by speeches highlighting his multifaceted contributions.
Naidu emphasized that Reddy’s dedication to literature, history, and social reform made him one of the most influential Telugu intellectuals. He noted Reddy’s extraordinary efforts in compiling the Golconda Kavula Sanchika in 1934, which documented the lives and works of 354 Telangana poets, preserving their contributions for posterity. The publication not only provided a comprehensive record of Telugu literary culture but also countered claims that the region lacked notable poets, ensuring future generations could access the rich history of Telangana literature.
Speakers also highlighted Reddy’s role in promoting library movements and literary societies. He served as president of the Andhra Granthalaya Udyamam in 1942, presided over the Granthalaya Mahasabha in Khammam in 1943, and led the Andhra Saraswatha Parishad in 1944. His leadership in these initiatives fostered literary scholarship, education, and cultural pride among Telugu-speaking communities. Dr. Varaprasad Reddy underscored that Reddy’s work transcended literature; it strengthened the cultural identity of the Telugu people under the Nizam’s rule.
Attendees paid homage to Reddy’s legacy through ceremonial tributes, awards, and reflections on his enduring impact. Dr. Nandini Sidha Reddy received the Suravaram Pratap Reddy Sahitya Puraskaram, symbolizing the continued recognition of literary excellence inspired by Reddy. Speakers warned that weakening media and newspaper values could threaten democracy, echoing Reddy’s belief in the power of informed citizens.
The event celebrated Reddy’s unwavering commitment to Telugu language, literature, and social awakening. His life and work serve as an enduring guide for Telangana and Telugu-speaking communities, offering a model of scholarship, activism, and cultural stewardship. The 130th birth anniversary not only honored a literary icon but also reaffirmed the importance of preserving and promoting Telugu heritage for future generations.
