Telangana recently commemorated the 130th birth anniversary of Suravaram Pratap Reddy, celebrated as a multifaceted genius a historian, writer, multilingual scholar, editor, and social reformer. Known for founding the Golconda Patrika in 1926, Reddy awakened public consciousness during the Nizam’s rule, promoting Telugu language and culture when it faced neglect. His dedication to literature and history was unmatched, and he played a pivotal role in preserving Telangana’s literary heritage for future generations.
The celebrations at Tank Bund, Hyderabad, were organized by the Suravaram Pratap Reddy Sahitya Vaijayanthi Trust, presided over by Acharya Elluri Shiva Reddy. Dignitaries included former Vice President Muppavarapu Venkaiah Naidu, Telangana Media Academy Chairman K. Srinivas Reddy, Sahitya Akademi awardee Dr. Nandini Sidha Reddy, Padma Bhushan awardee Dr. Varaprasad Reddy, and Trust members, along with Reddy’s family, poets, and writers. The program began with floral tributes to Reddy’s statue, honoring his immense contributions to literature and society.
Naidu praised Reddy as a guiding intellect whose initiatives in literature, journalism, and social reform shaped the Telugu community. He highlighted Reddy’s publication of the Golconda Kavula Sanchika in 1934, which documented the lives, poems, and works of 354 Telangana poets, demonstrating that the region had a rich literary tradition. This work countered criticisms that Telangana lacked noteworthy poets and remains a milestone in Telugu literary scholarship.
Speakers emphasized Reddy’s leadership in library movements and literary societies. He served as president of the Andhra Granthalaya Udyamam in 1942, presided over the Granthalaya Mahasabha in Khammam in 1943, and led the Andhra Saraswatha Parishad in 1944. These initiatives fostered literary scholarship, cultural pride, and education, establishing a foundation that continues to influence Telangana’s intellectual landscape.
The ceremony also highlighted Reddy’s belief in the importance of newspapers and media for public awareness. His establishment of the Golconda Patrika reinforced the role of media in sustaining democracy and civic consciousness. Speakers reminded attendees that when media values decline, democracy itself is weakened a principle Reddy championed throughout his life.
Dr. Nandini Sidha Reddy received the Suravaram Pratap Reddy Sahitya Puraskaram, symbolizing the trust’s ongoing commitment to honoring literary excellence. The celebrations reaffirmed Reddy’s enduring influence as a historian, writer, and social reformer whose vision guided the Telugu community from darkness into cultural enlightenment.
The 130th birth anniversary was not only a tribute to Reddy’s literary and historical achievements but also a celebration of his unwavering dedication to social awakening, education, and cultural preservation.
