Veteran filmmaker Nikkhil Advani believes a Kal Ho Naa Ho remake made for today’s audiences might look very different from the original.
Advani said he “would never get away” with Kal Ho Naa Ho’s classic ending if it were released now, given changing social attitudes.
Reflecting on how younger viewers interpret the film, he noted that jokes and dynamics from 2003 don’t read the same anymore.
Advani — who directed the original starring Shah Rukh Khan and Saif Ali Khan — called the bond between their characters “a bromance.”
He said that if a remake were attempted now, it could explore a romantic relationship between Aman and Rohit.
The director’s comments reflect broader shifts in how audiences view on‑screen male bonds and relationships.
Advani also shared that his own daughter found some aspects of the original subplot uncomfortable.
He explained that much of the original’s emotional weight came from the script’s layered writing.
The 2003 romantic drama still remains iconic for its music, performances, and emotional themes.
Exploring modern perspectives in a remake could reimagine the classic tale for a new generation.
