The southwest monsoon has officially arrived in Kerala, marking the beginning of India’s crucial rainy season.
Heavy rain lashed several parts of the state as the India Meteorological Department confirmed the monsoon onset over Kerala on June 4, 2026. The usual onset date is June 1, making this year’s arrival slightly delayed.
With the monsoon entering Kerala, weather activity is expected to increase across south India in the coming days. IMD has issued heavy rain alerts for Kerala and coastal Karnataka, while several Kerala districts are under yellow alert.
For farmers, this is one of the most important weather updates of the year.
The southwest monsoon provides a major share of India’s annual rainfall and plays a key role in agriculture, drinking water supply, reservoirs and food prices. Crops like rice, cotton, corn, soybean and sugarcane depend heavily on monsoon rains.
The rains also bring relief after weeks of intense summer heat across many parts of the country.
However, officials are urging people in rain-hit areas to stay alert, avoid waterlogged roads, and follow local weather warnings as thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy showers may continue.
