Modi Set To Break Nehru’s PM Tenure Record On June 10

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to create a major political milestone on June 10, 2026.

On that day, Modi will complete 4,399 consecutive days as India’s Prime Minister, making him the longest continuously serving democratically elected Prime Minister in the country’s history. He will surpass Jawaharlal Nehru’s elected PM tenure record of 4,398 days.

Modi first took oath as Prime Minister on May 26, 2014, after the BJP’s Lok Sabha victory. Since then, he has led the NDA government through three consecutive terms after the 2014, 2019 and 2024 general elections.

Nehru’s elected tenure is counted from May 13, 1952, after India’s first general elections, till his death on May 27, 1964. This is why the record specifically refers to the longest continuously serving democratically elected Prime Minister.

This is another big longevity record in Modi’s political career.

In July 2025, Modi had already surpassed Indira Gandhi’s uninterrupted PM tenure of 4,077 days. Earlier in 2026, his combined time as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister crossed 8,930 days, making him India’s longest-serving elected head of government.

For the BJP, this milestone is likely to be projected as proof of Modi’s sustained popularity and electoral strength.

For the opposition, the debate will remain around governance, democratic institutions, federalism, unemployment and the political direction of the country under a long-serving central leadership.

But one thing is clear.

On June 10, 2026, India’s political timeline will mark a historic shift as Modi moves past a record that stood for more than six decades.
