A Hyderabad-based woman has shared how her corporate career and her husband’s government-sector job shape their daily routines, finances and married life.
Suruchi Singh works in the corporate sector, while her husband, Shubham Kumar Singh, is a manager at Indian Oil Corporation. The couple believes that combining private-sector growth opportunities with government-job stability gives them the “best of both worlds.
Different Careers, Different Work Routines
Suruchi said she works from home three days a week, while her husband must attend the office physically.
Although her corporate work can be demanding during office hours, she said she can generally disconnect after completing her assignments. Her husband, however, may have more flexibility during the day but is expected to remain available for work-related calls even after office hours.
She described a key difference between the two sectors by saying corporate employees are often judged by their output, while government-sector officers may be judged by whether anything goes wrong under their supervision
Government Job Offers Stability
Suruchi said recent layoffs in the private sector made her appreciate the security associated with her husband’s job.
She believes having one stable income gives her greater freedom to explore business opportunities, startups and other career options with comparatively lower financial risk. It also makes long-term commitments, such as buying property, easier to plan.
At the same time, her corporate career offers a target-driven environment, performance-based rewards and the ability to switch companies for better opportunities.
Transfers Are the Biggest Challenge
Her husband’s position is transferable across India, which means the couple may have to relocate depending on his posting.
Suruchi said transfers can be challenging for couples in dual-career households. However, remote-working arrangements have made relocation more manageable and also allow them to experience different cities.
Couple Spends Around ₹1.1 Lakh Monthly
The couple reportedly spends approximately ₹1.1 lakh every month in Hyderabad.
Their estimated expenses include:
₹35,000 for rent
₹10,000 for household help
₹20,000 for groceries
₹5,000 for electricity and maintenance
₹12,000 for a car EMI
₹20,000 for weekend outings
₹10,000 for transportation
Their financial strategy is to cover most household expenses using Suruchi’s salary while attempting to save a significant portion of her husband’s earnings.
Marriage Should Not Revolve Around Work
The couple tries to keep weekends free and regularly spends time together through cooking, night walks and shared activities.
Suruchi advised working couples to build a life outside their jobs, maintain trust and ensure that their marriage does not take a back seat because of professional pressures.
