Kejriwal Backs Wangchuk’s Protest

In a social-media post, Kejriwal said Dharmendra Pradhan should be removed and Sonam Wangchuk appointed as the country’s Education Minister.

He also urged the Union government to listen to students affected by repeated examination controversies, arguing that young people continue to suffer whenever question papers are leaked. (www.ndtv.com)

Kejriwal compared the present agitation with the 2011 anti-corruption movement at Jantar Mantar and warned that governments that ignore public concerns can face serious political consequences.

Hunger Strike Over Exam Irregularities

Wangchuk began an indefinite hunger strike on June 28 as part of an agitation organised by the Cockroach Janta Party.

The group has been protesting at Jantar Mantar for more than 25 days and is demanding Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation over alleged examination irregularities. It has also announced a “Chalo Sansad” march on July 20, coinciding with the first day of Parliament’s Monsoon Session. (www.ndtv.com)

Concerns Over Wangchuk’s Health

According to the report, Wangchuk had entered the 19th day of his fast and had lost more than nine kilograms.

Doctors monitoring him described his health as critical and reported elevated uric-acid levels that could indicate muscle breakdown. Wangchuk, however, said in a video message that medical tests had not shown an immediate danger and that he intended to continue the fast. (www.ndtv.com)

Legal and Civil-Society Appeals

The Supreme Court Bar Association appealed to Wangchuk to end his hunger strike, saying the country needed him alive and actively involved in public life.

The Delhi High Court also directed authorities to monitor his health every day and provide medical intervention whenever required. The Centre and the Delhi government reportedly raised no objection to the arrangement. (www.ndtv.com)

The protest has intensified the political debate over the fairness, transparency and administration of national-level entrance examinations.
