IMD Confirms El Nino Return Monsoon Concerns Grow Across India

The India Meteorological Department has officially confirmed the return of El Nino conditions over the Pacific Ocean, raising concerns about its impact on India’s southwest monsoon.
According to the IMD’s June 2026 ENSO and Indian Ocean Dipole bulletin, sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean have crossed the official threshold needed for El Nino conditions.
Scientists say the atmosphere has also started responding to the warming oceans, meaning the ocean-atmosphere system is now firmly in an El Nino phase.
El Nino is a climate phenomenon linked to hotter global temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, weaker monsoons, drought risks, and extreme weather events in different parts of the world.
For India, El Nino years are closely watched because they can affect rainfall distribution during the monsoon season.
Experts say the phenomenon may strengthen further in the coming months, making weather conditions more unpredictable.
While El Nino does not automatically mean drought, it can influence agriculture, water availability, food prices, heatwaves, and overall climate conditions.
The development comes at a time when many parts of India are already facing intense summer heat and climate-related stress.
