Historic First: ‘Vande Mataram’ to Echo From Red Fort on August 15
India’s National Song ‘Vande Mataram’ will be sung from the ramparts of the Red Fort for the first time during Independence Day celebrations on August 15, 2026, marking a historic addition to the traditional ceremony.
The announcement was made by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh during a press conference in New Delhi. The inclusion comes as the country observes 150 years of ‘Vande Mataram’, which played a significant role during India’s freedom struggle.

According to officials, the song will be performed when the Prime Minister arrives at the Red Fort.
Following the rendition, the Prime Minister will unfurl the National Flag and address the nation from the historic venue as part of the 80th Independence Day celebrations.
2,500 NCC Cadets and My Bharat Volunteers to Participate
Around 2,500 NCC cadets and My Bharat volunteers will form the words “Vande Mataram” on Gyanpath, opposite the Red Fort ramparts.
An Indian Air Force Mi-17 helicopter will also conduct a flypast carrying a banner commemorating 150 years of the National Song and will shower flower petals over the gathering.
5,000 Special Guests Invited
The Independence Day celebrations will also include around 5,000 special guests, selected from different fields and recognised for their achievements.
Significance of Vande Mataram
Written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, Vande Mataram became a powerful symbol during India’s independence movement and was later accorded the status of the National Song of India, with equal honour alongside the National Anthem.
The song was first published in Anandamath and became widely associated with the freedom movement during the early 20th century.
