A peaceful mountain village turned into a watery grave in seconds . On the night of 4 August 2025, heavy monsoon rains triggered a terrifying flash flood in Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh šŸ”ļø. At least 4 people have been confirmed deadĀ and over 50 are missing, according to official rescue teams šŸ†˜.

The worst-hit was Malana village, an isolated area near the Parvati Valley, which got cut off completelyĀ as gushing waters swept away houses, roads, and vehicles . Visuals released by emergency officials show uprooted trees, mangled metal, and people screaming for help in the dark .

What exactly happened?

Late evening on Sunday (4 Aug), a cloudburstĀ struck the higher reaches of the valley ā›ˆļø. Water from overflowing streams turned into violent torrents, crashing into homes while most villagers were asleep . ā€œIt felt like a monster was coming down the mountain,ā€ said a survivor who managed to escape with his children .

Helicopters couldn’t land initially due to fog and weather issues . So ITBP and NDRF jawansĀ had to trek on foot with ropes and stretchersĀ to reach stranded villagers 🄾.

Why does this keep happening?

Himachal and Uttarakhand have seen a 35% spike in extreme rain eventsĀ in the last 5 years due to climate changeĀ (India Meteorological Dept, 2025) . Reckless construction, unregulated tourism, and deforestation are turning the Himalayan belt into a disaster magnet .

This isn't the first time šŸŒ§ļø. In 2023, a similar flood in Mandi had killed 26. Yet, lessons are still not learned .

Who's affected?

  • Local villagersĀ who lost homes, cattle, and livelihood

  • Rescue workersĀ risking lives to reach people in isolated zones

  • TouristsĀ who were trekking in the area—several are among the missing

  • Kids and elders, who couldn’t outrun the water 🌊

One villager said, "We live near rivers, but never imagined they’d rise like this."Ā

What now?

  • Search & rescueĀ operations continue with drone mapping, sniffer dogs, and army help

  • ₹10 lakh compensation announced for deceased families (Himachal CM Office)

  • Evacuation underway for nearby villages fearing aftershocks or more flooding

MediaFx Take 🧠

So who pays the price for tourist roads and concrete hotels in eco-sensitive zones? It’s the villagers, farmers, and local kidsĀ who lose homes, loved ones, and land .

Governments build ropeways and malls, but skip flood early-warning systems and forest cover protection 🌲. Will this disaster finally shake them up?

Let’s stop calling these ā€˜natural’ disasters. They're manmade greed-triggered tragediesĀ . The 99% suffer, while the system shrugs .
