170+ Tonnes Cleared: GHMC Steps Up Monsoon Clean-Up
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has launched a 10-day Special Monsoon Drive across Hyderabad to improve sanitation, reduce waterlogging and strengthen public health preparedness during the rainy season.
On the second day of the campaign, GHMC teams removed more than 170 metric tonnes of waste, including 126.6 MT of legacy municipal solid waste and 46.6 MT of construction and demolition waste.
Waste Cleared, Drains Targeted
GHMC also removed 11.9 MT of floating waste and silt in an effort to keep water channels clear during the monsoon.
The civic body filled 105 potholes, cleaned 65 catch pits and cleared two culverts as part of the drive.
Public Toilets And Waste Bins Checked
As part of the monsoon preparedness measures, GHMC inspected 24 public toilets and placed 107 commercial waste bins at shops to improve waste collection.
The corporation also initiated one rainwater harvesting structure and surveyed two non-residential buildings.
Awareness Drive Across Hyderabad
GHMC conducted 29 awareness meetings related to bulk waste generators and completed 26 BWG registrations.
Training and awareness programmes were also held in 18 schools, reaching around 700 participants. Health and veterinary teams carried out 60 information, education and communication activities.
Parks And Tree Waste Also Cleared
The campaign also covered parks and tree waste.
GHMC removed 47.5 MT of pruned tree branches and another 10.45 MT of dry and green waste from 34 parks.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Hyderabad often faces waterlogging, blocked drains and sanitation challenges during heavy monsoon spells.
By clearing waste, cleaning catch pits, repairing potholes and removing silt before conditions worsen, GHMC is trying to reduce some of the problems that can disrupt roads and neighbourhoods during intense rain.
The drive is also significant because it combines sanitation work with public awareness and preventive health measures rather than focusing only on garbage removal.
