A deadly hotel fire in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar has left the city shaken after at least 21 people were killed, including several foreign nationals.
The fire reportedly broke out on Wednesday morning in a four-storey hotel building, with officials suspecting that it may have started from a restaurant operating on the lower floor. Thick smoke quickly spread through the building, trapping many guests on the upper floors.
As panic took over, locals became the first rescuers.
Residents rushed to the spot after hearing screams and seeing people stuck inside the smoke-filled building. Some broke windows, brought blankets and mattresses, and tried to help people jump safely from the upper floors.
Witnesses said people were screaming for help as smoke filled the rooms and staircases. Several victims were later found in bathrooms, stairways and other corners of the building where they had tried to escape the smoke.
Fire officials sent multiple fire tenders to the spot, while police and emergency teams moved the injured to hospitals. Around 49 people were taken for treatment, and several remained in critical condition after the incident.
Police have registered a case and detained the building owner as the investigation continues. Officials are now looking into possible safety violations, including fire safety arrangements, building permissions and whether the hotel was following basic emergency norms.
