CBSE Gets New Chairman Amid Marking Row

IAS officer Prashant Sitaram Lokhande has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education, while Varun Bhardwaj has been named the new Secretary of the board.

The appointments come at a significant time for CBSE, which is currently facing scrutiny over its on-screen marking system introduced for the evaluation of Class 12 answer sheets.

Under the system, scanned copies of students’ answer books were evaluated digitally instead of physical answer sheets being checked manually. However, the process has drawn complaints from students and parents over alleged technical issues, payment failures, delays and concerns related to transparency in re-evaluation.

A one-member committee is examining the functioning of the on-screen marking system and is expected to submit its report to the government.

CBSE has also opened the re-evaluation window till June 6 midnight for students who have received scanned copies of their evaluated answer books. Eligible students can apply for verification and seek re-evaluation of specific answers through the official process.

The leadership change is being closely watched as the board handles concerns related to evaluation, student grievances and confidence in its digital systems.

For lakhs of students, the issue goes beyond administrative appointments. It is directly linked to the credibility of marks, fairness in assessment and trust in one of India’s most important school examination boards.
