57% Tariff-Free From Day One: India–New Zealand Trade Deal Set for Major Boost

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has announced that 57% of New Zealand’s exports to India will become tariff-free from the first day the India–New Zealand Free Trade Agreement comes into force.

Luxon said the agreement would open major opportunities for New Zealand businesses by improving access to India’s vast consumer market. Once the deal is fully implemented, tariffs are expected to be reduced or eliminated on nearly 95% of New Zealand’s exports to India. (The Beehive)

The announcement comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to New Zealand on July 10 and 11, 2026. Modi and Luxon are expected to hold bilateral discussions in Auckland covering trade, investment, technology, education, tourism, maritime security and other strategic areas. The deal is expected to support stronger commercial ties, diversify supply chains and create new opportunities for exporters and businesses in both countries.
