Congress Rajya Sabha MP Renuka Chowdhury strongly criticised the police response to the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest in Delhi, questioning the use of tear gas and lathis against young demonstrators.
Speaking outside Parliament, Chowdhury accused the government of using force against its own citizens instead of listening to their concerns. She asked why students and young protesters were subjected to police action while trying to raise issues related to alleged irregularities in competitive examinations. (Navbharat Times)
Questions Government’s Handling of Protest
Chowdhury reportedly described the response as an attack on democratic dissent and questioned how a government that presents itself as powerful could use force against young people.
She also criticised the alleged closure of Parliament gates and asked why the voices of protesters were not being allowed to reach elected representatives. (Facebook)
Police Defend Their Action
Delhi Police, however, maintained that the demonstration had become aggressive and violent, alleging that some protesters attempted to breach barricades, attacked personnel and damaged public property.
Police said force was used after repeated warnings and detained around 70 protesters following the clashes. (The Economic Times)
Protesters Demand Exam Accountability
The youth-led CJP protest is demanding accountability over alleged competitive-examination paper leaks and irregularities. Protesters have also called for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Although the organisation has decided not to hold another Parliament march to prevent further injuries, it has said that its protest will continue at Jantar Mantar. (Reuters)
