TMC Shuts Down Congress Merger Rumours, Says Alliance Still Possible

Political buzz erupted in Delhi after reports suggested that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) could merge with the Congress party amid ongoing turmoil within the Bengal-based party.

But TMC has firmly rejected the speculation.

Party leaders called the merger reports “baseless” and clarified that no discussions about a merger took place during recent meetings between senior Congress and TMC leaders. The clarification came after meetings involving Mamata Banerjee, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Abhishek Banerjee triggered intense political speculation.

While ruling out a merger, TMC leaders indicated that cooperation within the opposition alliance remains possible. They stressed that political alliances are different from party mergers and said the doors remain open for working together against the BJP when necessary.

The rumours gained traction at a sensitive time for TMC, which has been facing internal challenges, including rebellion by some MPs and organisational restructuring within the party. Recent developments have fuelled questions about the future direction of Mamata Banerjee’s party.

Despite the speculation, TMC leaders maintain that the party remains independent and that no merger proposal is under consideration.

Why This Matters

The opposition landscape in India is shifting rapidly ahead of future national political battles.

For Gen-Z voters, this is a reminder that alliances and mergers are not the same thing. Parties may work together electorally while still keeping their separate identities and leadership structures.
