Actor Kiran Abbavaram has spoken about what he described as an imbalance between the Telugu and Tamil film markets, saying Telugu films often struggle to secure enough theatres in Tamil Nadu.

The actor made the comments while promoting his upcoming film Chennai Love Story, which is scheduled to release on July 24. He said Telugu audiences regularly support Tamil stars and dubbed films, but Telugu actors do not receive the same level of encouragement in Tamil Nadu. (NTV Telugu)

“We Support Tamil Heroes”

Kiran said films featuring major Tamil stars are widely welcomed by Telugu audiences and often receive strong theatrical support in the Telugu states.

He argued that Telugu films should receive similar backing from audiences, distributors and theatre owners in Tamil Nadu.

According to him, this lack of reciprocity has become a wider concern for many Telugu actors and producers, not just for one particular film. (NTV Telugu)

‘Lenin’ Could Not Find Enough Screens

Kiran referred to the recent release of Suriya’s Karuppu in Telugu as Veerabhadrudu, saying Telugu audiences supported the film.

However, he claimed that when the makers considered releasing the Telugu hit Lenin in Tamil, they struggled to find an adequate number of theatres.

He said this illustrated the challenges Telugu films face while attempting to enter the Tamil theatrical market. (NTV Telugu)

Distributors Gave a Direct Answer

Kiran said he experienced a similar situation while discussing the Tamil Nadu release of Chennai Love Story.

According to the actor, distributors told the team directly that Tamil audiences generally do not show much interest in films starring Telugu heroes.

He expressed hope that the situation would change and that both film industries would develop stronger mutual cooperation and support. (NTV Telugu)

Debate Over Cross-Industry Support

Kiran’s remarks have renewed discussion around theatrical access, dubbing, distribution and audience acceptance between Tollywood and Kollywood.

While several Tamil films have built large markets in the Telugu states, only a limited number of Telugu films and stars have achieved comparable theatrical reach in Tamil Nadu.

The performance of Chennai Love Story could now draw further attention to this debate when the film reaches theatres.
