BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla has dismissed speculation surrounding Rohit Sharma’s international retirement, saying there is currently no question of the veteran opener stepping away from the Indian team. His remarks came shortly after Rohit answered critics with a commanding century at Lord’s during India’s ODI series against England.
Retirement Reports Have ‘No Meaning’
Speaking during the UP T20 League mini-auction in Agra, Rajeev Shukla said Rohit remains an active member of the Indian team and continues to play.
He rejected reports circulating across traditional and social media about Rohit’s possible retirement, stating that such speculation had no substance at present.
Rohit Responds With Lord’s Masterclass
Retirement speculation had intensified following a prolonged lean run, with some reports suggesting that the third ODI at Lord’s could become Rohit’s final international appearance.
The 39-year-old responded emphatically by scoring 138 runs from 110 deliveries. With the innings, Rohit became the first Indian batter to score an ODI century at Lord’s.
Focus Remains on Performing for India
Following his century, Rohit said his responsibility was to perform with the bat, represent India and contribute to the team’s success.
He acknowledged that outside noise had followed him throughout his career but maintained that his attention remained firmly on what he could deliver on the field.
Eyes on the 2027 ODI World Cup
Rohit has repeatedly indicated that he wants to continue playing international cricket and remains focused on earning selection for India’s squad for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
His Lord’s century, combined with Rajeev Shukla’s public backing, has temporarily pushed back speculation that the former India captain is nearing retirement.
Shukla Backs Gill-Gambhir Leadership
Rajeev Shukla also rejected suggestions that India needed immediate changes in its leadership structure amid criticism surrounding captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
He said selection decisions rest with the selectors and argued that changes were unnecessary while the team continued to perform and win matches.
