Many know Sonam Wangchuk as the inspiration behind the character Phunsukh Wangdu from 3 Idiots. But his real-life journey goes far beyond cinema.
For more than three decades, Wangchuk has worked on education reforms, sustainable technologies and solutions for communities living in the challenging environment of Ladakh.
Turning “Failures” Into Future Leaders
At just 22, Sonam Wangchuk founded SECMOL (Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh) with a different vision to support students who were considered failures by the conventional education system.
The initiative focused on practical learning, local culture and empowering students through hands-on education.
Building Against Nature’s Challenges
Understanding Ladakh’s extreme climate, Wangchuk worked on environmentally sustainable buildings made using local materials like mud and earth.
These structures were designed to remain warm even when outside temperatures dropped below freezing levels, reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
Ice Stupas: Fighting Water Crisis
As climate change caused glaciers to retreat and affected farming communities, Wangchuk introduced the concept of Ice Stupas artificial glaciers that store winter water in the form of giant ice cones.
The stored water melts during the farming season, helping farmers deal with water shortages.
Awards Turned Into Action
In 2016, Wangchuk received the Rolex Award for Enterprise. Instead of treating it as a personal achievement, he used the recognition and funds towards creating the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL).
The institute promotes “learning by doing” focusing on practical skills rather than only classroom examinations.
Innovation For Soldiers
During the Galwan standoff, when soldiers faced extreme cold conditions, Wangchuk developed solar-heated military shelters designed to reduce dependence on fuel in high-altitude areas.
Recognition For His Work
His efforts in education, environmental innovation and community empowerment earned him the Ramon Magsaysay Award, one of Asia’s most prestigious honours.
More Than A Protest Figure
