Minor Injury Turns Tragic: 18-Month-Old Dies After Anaesthesia

An 18-month-old boy in Kerala’s Kannur district died after remaining critical for five days following anaesthesia given for stitching a cut on his lip.

The child, identified as Devansh Shouria, had suffered the injury after falling while playing in the courtyard of his house on July 5. His parents took him to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur, where doctors administered anaesthesia before stitching the wound. Soon after, his condition reportedly turned critical and he never regained consciousness. (Hindustan Times)
Shifted for Advanced Treatment
After the child’s condition worsened, he was shifted to Baby Memorial Hospital’s Kannur unit for advanced care.
He died at around 9 pm on Friday, July 10. The report said Devansh was the only child of T Suraj and Vijisha of Mathamangalam in Eramam-Kuttoor grama panchayat, and was born after eight years of their marriage. (Hindustan Times)
Doctor Booked After Complaint
Payyannur police registered a case against Dr Anjali Poduval, the anaesthetist at Baby Memorial Hospital, Payyannur, based on a complaint filed by the child’s relative.
The doctor has been booked under Section 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with acts endangering life or personal safety. (Hindustan Times)
Hospital Denies Negligence
Baby Memorial Hospital has denied allegations of medical negligence.
In its statement, the hospital said the child suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest immediately after anaesthesia was administered. The hospital maintained that accepted treatment protocols were followed and that every possible effort was made to save the child. (Hindustan Times)
Protest Demanding Action
Following the incident, DYFI workers staged a protest march to Baby Memorial Hospital in Payyannur, demanding action over the toddler’s death. (Hindustan Times)
