Jharkhand Row Escalates: 100+ ABVP Workers Detained, Assembly Adjourned

The student protest over alleged irregularities in Jharkhand recruitment examinations intensified in Ranchi on Tuesday, August 11, with more than 100 Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) workers detained while marching towards the state Assembly.
The developments came a day after thousands of job aspirants clashed with security personnel during a march towards the Assembly. Police had used water cannons, tear gas and batons as protesters attempted to breach barricades.
ABVP March Stopped
ABVP workers had announced a march from the Old Vidhan Sabha to the New Vidhan Sabha to protest police action against students.
The organisation accused the authorities of using force against students protesting alleged irregularities in recruitment examinations and planned to gherao the Assembly. Police detained the protesters before they could reach the Assembly premises.
Assembly Adjourned Sine Die
The issue also erupted inside the Jharkhand Assembly, where BJP legislators raised the student protest and alleged police action against demonstrators.
Amid the uproar, the Speaker adjourned the Assembly sine die, bringing the session to an early end—one day ahead of its scheduled conclusion.
What Are Students Demanding?
The broader agitation centres on alleged irregularities in JPSC and JSSC recruitment examinations.
Protesting students and job aspirants have demanded measures including:
Cancellation of disputed recruitment examinations
Comprehensive JPSC-JSSC reforms
An independent probe into alleged irregularities
Greater transparency in the recruitment process
The government has said it has accepted a large majority of the protesters' demands, but the protesters dispute that assessment.
Government vs Opposition
The agitation has increasingly become a political flashpoint.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren has accused the BJP of attempting to turn the students' movement into a political platform, while the BJP has backed the protesters and criticised the government's handling of the issue.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also condemned the use of force against protesting students and called for dialogue to resolve their grievances. Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal similarly expressed support for the students.
ED Probe Adds Another Layer
The controversy has also expanded beyond street protests. The Enforcement Directorate has opened a money-laundering investigation into alleged irregularities in Jharkhand recruitment examinations, including the JSSC-CGL examination.
