Iran Redraws Strait of Hormuz Map Amid Growing Tensions

Iran’s military strategy in the Strait of Hormuz has taken a dramatic turn. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has released a new map showing an expanded operational area that significantly increases the size of the strategically important waterway.

The updated map transforms the Strait of Hormuz from a narrow passage between Iran and Oman into a vast operational zone. The strait, which is vital for global energy transit, has seen its width increase tenfold, now spanning between 322 km and 483 km. This expansion extends beyond Iran’s recognized territorial waters, claiming control over areas near the UAE and Oman, including key shipping lanes. The U.S. and Israel’s escalating conflict with Iran, especially since the bombing of Iranian targets in February 2026, has turned the Strait into a geopolitical flashpoint. The new IRGC strategy positions Iran to exert greater control over this critical route, heightening global concern over oil supply disruptions. With one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through Hormuz daily, any disruption in the strait would send oil prices soaring, and the region remains on a razor’s edge, as Tehran threatens to use its strategic position to block all commercial shipping.
