Hyderabad’s Chanchalguda Jail launches ‘Feel the Jail’ initiative: Experience life behind bars

In an unprecedented move, Hyderabad’s Chanchalguda Central Jail has introduced a unique initiative, *Feel the Jail*, offering citizens the chance to experience prison life firsthand. The new programme allows visitors to spend 12 or 24 hours in the jail, where they will experience recreated prison barracks, restricted movement, prison-style meals, and a fixed daily routine for a fee.

The initiative, launched in tandem with the Chanchalguda Prison Museum, is designed to raise awareness about the hardships and realities of prison life while promoting empathy for the incarcerated. Visitors will get an immersive experience of what it’s like behind bars, with strict schedules and the same conditions that prisoners face on a daily basis.

The revenue generated from this experience will be directed towards the welfare and rehabilitation of prisoners, as well as skill development programmes aimed at helping them reintegrate into society post-release.

This initiative has already sparked conversations around the need for prison reforms, with many hailing it as a bold step toward fostering greater understanding and empathy for the challenges faced by the incarcerated community.
