He won by getting huge votes over his opponents. In the country's first presidential election since 2011, Dharman Shanmugaratnam defeated two contenders, Ng Kok Sang and Tan Kin Lian, both leaders of Chinese descent. Both of them managed to get only 15.7 percent and 13.88 percent votes respectively. Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong congratulated Tharman Shanmugaratnam who won the presidential election. Singaporeans have chosen Tharman Shanmugaratnam as the next president through their vote. I believe that as the head of state, he will represent us both at home and abroad. I am thankful to the three candidates who contested the presidential election. Voters and contestants have shown great awareness in the elections.
