The Supreme Court on Friday (September 1) sentenced Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former MP Prabhunath Singh to life imprisonment in the twin murder case that took place almost 28 years ago (1995). The apex court found Prabhunath Singh guilty in the 1995 shooting deaths of two men for not voting for him. In this case, the High Court had earlier dismissed the verdict acquitting him and gave a verdict to this extent. The Supreme Court commented during the verdict that this is the most painful incident in the country's criminal justice system. A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Abhay Soka and Vikram Nath convicted Singh on August 18 under Sections 302 and 307 of the IPC. After hearing arguments on sentencing, the bench sentenced the convict to life imprisonment. The Supreme Court has ordered the Bihar government to pay an ex-gratia of Rs 10 lakh each to the families of the deceased in this case.
