India’s Military Theatre Command Plan Nears Crucial Approval Stage
India’s Chief of Defence Staff, General N.S. Raja Subramani, is expected to present the proposed military theatre commands strategy to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh by the end of July 2026.
The presentation is expected to outline the future command structure of the Indian Armed Forces and seek the minister’s approval before the proposal is forwarded to the Cabinet Committee on Security for a final decision. (Hindustan Times)
What Are Theatre Commands?
Theatre commands are designed to bring personnel and resources from the Army, Navy and Air Force under a unified command for operations in a particular geographical or strategic area.
The proposed structure reportedly includes:
A Northern Theatre Command focused on the border with China
A Western Theatre Command focused on Pakistan
A Maritime Theatre Command, incorporating the Andaman and Nicobar Command
The plan also proposes four new four-star military positions, including a Vice Chief of Defence Staff. Each theatre command would be headed by a four-star officer. (Hindustan Times)
Proposal Prepared Under Previous CDS
Former CDS General Anil Chauhan reportedly submitted the final draft of the theatre commands proposal before completing his tenure on May 31.
General Subramani, who recently became India’s third Chief of Defence Staff, is now expected to explain the proposal to key stakeholders and the Defence Minister. The broader theatre-command initiative has been under development since 2022. (Hindustan Times)
How the New Structure Could Work
Under the proposed system, operational responsibility during conflict would shift from the individual service chiefs to the theatre commanders.

Concerns Within the Armed Forces
Although the political leadership is reportedly supportive of the reforms, concerns remain within the three services.
The Army and Navy are said to broadly support the plan. The Air Force, however, has reportedly raised questions about dividing its limited aircraft and other aerial resources among multiple theatre commands.
