Cinema Kings Enter Poll Battle

South India has a long tradition of cinema stars turning into political leaders. We saw it with NTR, MGR, Jayalalithaa. Now, Vijay and Pawan Kalyan are carrying forward that legacy.

Vijay officially launched his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in February 2024. Even before this, his fan club “Vijay Makkal Iyakkam” showed power in the 2021 local body polls, winning 115 out of 169 seats.

Pawan Kalyan’s journey was tougher. His Janasena Party managed just 1 seat in 2019. He himself lost both the seats he contested. But in 2024, he turned the tables. By forming an alliance with TDP and BJP, Janasena won 21 out of 21 seats, and Pawan became the Deputy CM of Andhra Pradesh.

Reel Stardom vs Real Politics

Vijay’s clean image and youth connect may help him. He has even spoken against the Citizenship Amendment Act, calling it harmful for social harmony. That gives him a strong #PeopleFirst image.

Pawan, on the other hand, is balancing politics and cinema. He continues acting in movies like They Call Him OG and Hari Hara Veera Mallu but has hinted he might quit films to focus on politics.

Still, critics like actor Prakash Raj argue that stars enter politics only because of fan popularity, not real understanding of governance. The challenge is clear: only those who fight for jobs, farmers, education, and women’s safety will survive in politics.

The Numbers Tell the Story

  • Vijay’s movement: 115 wins out of 169 in 2021 local polls.

  • Pawan’s journey: 1 seat in 2019 ➡️ 21 seats in 2024.

  • Both depend strongly on youth voters.

  • Together, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh have over 10 crore voters.

People’s Pulse

For common people, fan craze is exciting, but real issues matter more. Rising fuel prices, unemployment, and cost of living are everyday struggles. Leaders who forget these ground realities will be rejected, no matter how many fans cheer in theatres.

MediaFx Opinion

From people’s point of view, politics is not cinema. Vijay can succeed only if he avoids overconfidence and listens to working-class needs. Pawan Kalyan showed that with patience and alliances, stars can transform into political leaders. Now it’s up to Vijay to prove whether his stardom is more than just box office magic.

What do you think — will Vijay create a “Thalapathy Wave” like Pawan’s “Power Star Wave”? Share your thoughts in the comments.
