Beyond BMI: A More Accurate, Health‑Based Framework for Defining Obesity

Doctors increasingly agree that BMI alone fails to capture key aspects of weight‑related health, such as where fat is stored and how it affects disease risk.

While BMI is easy to calculate, it doesn’t differentiate between muscle mass and fat, nor assess dangerous fat around the abdomen.

New criteria now consider waist‑to‑hip ratio, visceral fat levels, and metabolic health markers to identify obesity more meaningfully.

Patients with a “normal” BMI could still be at risk if they have unhealthy fat patterns or metabolic dysfunction.

Conversely, people traditionally labeled overweight may be metabolically healthy if they have proportionate muscle and low visceral fat.

This broader clinical definition aims to improve early detection, personalized treatment, and better long‑term health outcomes.
