🌊🇮🇳 Young Army Hero’s Final Act: Saved a Comrade, Lost Himself in Sikkim’s Raging River 💔

TL;DR: Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, a 23-year-old officer from Ayodhya, tragically lost his life while heroically saving fellow soldier Agniveer Stephan Subba from drowning during a patrol in North Sikkim. Despite successfully rescuing his comrade, Lt. Tiwari was swept away by the strong current. His body was recovered 800 meters downstream. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a ₹50 lakh compensation and a memorial in his honor.

🪖 A Hero’s Final Mission in the Himalayas 🏔️

On May 22, 2025, Lieutenant Shashank Tiwari, serving in the Indian Army's Sikkim Scouts regiment, was leading a route-clearing team towards a tactical forward base in North Sikkim. During this operation, Agniveer Stephan Subba slipped while crossing a makeshift log bridge and was swept away by a strong mountain stream. Without hesitation, Lt. Tiwari jumped into the frigid waters to save his comrade. With assistance from Naik Pukar Katel, they managed to pull Subba to safety. However, Lt. Tiwari was overcome by the current and was found 800 meters downstream after half an hour. 


🎓 From Ayodhya to the Frontlines 🇮🇳

Lt. Tiwari hailed from Gaddopur in Ayodhya Cantonment. He was commissioned into the Indian Army on December 14, 2024, after completing his training at the National Defence Academy. He was the only child of his parents; his father, Jung Bahadur Tiwari, is currently serving in the Merchant Navy and was stationed in the USA at the time of the incident.

The Indian Army has lauded Lt. Tiwari's actions as a true reflection of the force’s core values—selfless service, integrity, and leadership by example. His sacrifice highlights the enduring bond between officers and soldiers, forged in both war and peace. 

🏛️ Honoring the Ultimate Sacrifice 🙏

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced a ₹50 lakh financial aid for Lt. Tiwari's family and stated that a memorial would be built in his honor in Ayodhya. His mortal remains were flown to Ayodhya, and the final rites were conducted with full military and state honors at Jamthara Ghat.
