As the excitement builds for the prestigious T20 World Cup, India's team selection has already sparked debates and dissatisfaction among fans and cricket pundits alike. Notably, as soon as some star players secured their spots, their on-field performance seemed to relax.
Hardik Pandya, named vice-captain and Mumbai Indians' captain, failed to score in his recent match against Lucknow Super Giants, though he managed to take 2 wickets for 26 runs. His performance, however, was not quite as expected given his high standards.
Shivam Dube, known for his explosive batting, was dismissed for a duck in his match against Punjab Kings following his selection. The situation was similar for Rohit Sharma, India's captain, who scored only 4 runs against the Lucknow Super Giants, raising concerns about his form ahead of the World Cup.
Ravindra Jadeja, despite securing a spot due to his all-rounder capabilities, ended his innings at just 2 runs in the match against Punjab Kings. Suryakumar Yadav, despite being one of the IPL's highest scorers, could only make 10 runs in his latest outing post-selection.
Arshdeep Singh, another selected player, gave away 52 runs in 4 overs with an economy rate of 13 against Chennai Super Kings, taking only one wicket. Similarly, Yuzvendra Chahal conceded 62 runs in 4 overs without claiming any wickets in his last match. Sanju Samson also failed to open his account, getting bowled early.
These performances raise a critical question: Has the early announcement of the World Cup team led to a drop in intensity among the selected players, or are these just off days?
